About

My name is Nick Frentz, and I’m proud to serve as your Senator for District 19. Thanks for visiting our campaign website.

Members of my family first moved to Mankato over 150 years ago. My wife Jill and I started our own family together in North Mankato in 1989 and we feel fortunate that our four children were all born here and have been enrolled in the excellent local schools. We are proud to call Minnesota “home”.

For over 28 years, I’ve enjoyed working in Mankato and volunteering to help with area students, youth sports, charity boards, non-profits, special events and more. 2020 Capitol Report

  • Hwy 14 Passage (SF 3878)

    I was the Senate Chief Author of the Highway 14 funding bill that should pave the way for a federal loan to help us build four lanes from Nicollet to New Ulm. This is the end result of years of dedicated advocacy by many people, and it also was also truly bipartisan.

  • Farm Safety – “Landon’s Law” (SF 3007)

    After the death of St. Peter High School student Landon Gran in a grain bin accident, I chief authored legislation that provides funding for farmers looking to upgrade safety features of grain bins. We were glad to see it signed into law.

  • Border-to-Border Rural Broadband (SF 4494)

    I was proud to the co-author and a negotiator of the bill to secure $27 million toward rural internet access for Minnesotans who don’t have it. This bill provided money to help schools and students that lack high speed internet access. It also established a telemedicine equipment reimbursement program. The bill passed the Senate in special session and I hope the House and Governor will give final approval in the near future.

  • Elections Bill (HF 3429)

    We need safe and secure elections. This bill expanded dates for absentee voting and included funding to make sure we have enough mail-in ballot capacity, workers to handle the elections, and security to prevent any cyber hacking.

  • Police Reform (SF 37-2)

    We passed legislation in the second special session to address police reform. The bill includes a statewide ban on choke holds, neck restraints, and a prohibition on warrior-style training for officers.

  • COVID 19 Emergency Response

    We successfully passed legislation that appropriated over $500 million to help MN prepare for the pandemic. The funding includes:
    • $200 million to help support the state’s health care system
    • $9 million for food shelves
    • $32 million for housing support and homelessness
    • $30 million for child care providers. (Gov. Walz added $56.6 million)
    • $60.3 million for small business assistance

  • Agriculture

    In addition to the farm safety legislation, we appropriated $50 million to the Rural Finance Authority (RFA). RFA funding helps rural Minnesota with challenges including low commodity prices. These funds can also be used for a variety of financing resources for farmers including beginning farmer loans.

  • Our State Budget Challenges

    The legislature will have it’s hands full for the 2021-2022 biennium. State revenues have fallen because of the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our business, local government, and individuals. Since the Minnesota Constitution requires a balanced budget (which is a good thing) there will be some very tough decisions to make. These budget challenges should not change our priorities as a state. More than ever, we need to focus on health care for the most vulnerable in our communities. We need a strong education system that fully supports teachers and students. Our area has grown tremendously in the last decade, and a strong catalyst has been our terrific area schools, welcoming approach, and quality of life.

  • Bonding

    Minnesota badly needs us to pass a robust bonding infrastructure bill. A $1.8 billion bill failed in the House this month. This failure was especially unfortunate because the bill included Section 179 tax relief for our farmers and businesses. Count on me to vote “yes” if this bill ever makes it to the Senate floor. Just like a family needs to invest in a home or like a business needs to invest in its building or equipment, Minnesota needs to invest in itself. Given our circumstances, interest rates are low, our state has an excellent credit rating, and we have put off some much needed projects in recent years. We should pass this now.

    This bonding bill included $7.2 million for Mankato water quality projects on the Minnesota River, $1.8 million for planned improvements for MSOP-Saint Peter Regional Treatment Center, and significant funding for local roads, water projects, and bridge improvements across Minnesota. A lot of these projects would be in Greater Minnesota and are badly needed.
